Video Listing Spotted on Google Local

Posted on January 24, 2013

Icon - Google+In at least one occurrence so far, a Google search engine results page (SERP) has been observed to include a Google+ Local listing that incorporates a video from the user’s homepage. When performing a search for plumbing charleston sc, it is clearly the most visible and enticing result, as it is the only one with a video thumbnail preview.

SERP Video - Plumping Charleston SCWhile no definitive conclusions can be drawn from a single SERP, there are several possible explanations. It could be something as simple as a glitch on Google’s end that allowed a video to be pulled into the listing. But a far more interesting thought is that Google is testing this as a new feature to promote the social aspect of Google+ Local. And, while this may still just be an error that allowed this feature to be seen ahead of time (rather than a larger scaled test), there is definitely some sort of built-in functionality that is allowing it to happen.

Regardless of whether or not this is an imminent change, it is certainly consistent with the direction trends in search have been heading, so now more than ever, it is a good idea for local business owners to create and publish video content (and especially on Google+).

How to Add Videos to Your Google+ Local Page

Adding videos to Google+ Local listings is pretty simple, but the somewhat complicated part is making sure your user account is properly set up and verified to manage your business’s listing. If you have not already done so, we highly recommend reading our tutorial on that process called Verifying Your Google+ Local Page. When that is completed, just follow the steps below.

  1. Log into your Google+ account
  2. On the left hand side of the screen, click the ‘Pages’ tab (you may have to hover over ‘More’)
  3. Click the ‘Switch to this page’ button that corresponds to your business’s Google+ page
  4. Directly under your Cover Photo, click the ‘Videos’ tab, then click the link that says ‘Upload new videos.’
  5. Then, simply drag a video file into the window, or click the button and browse for the video you wish to upload. Feel free to create albums for videos on similar topics.

That’s it, potential clients can now view your videos when they visit your Google+ Local listing, and you are ready to gain a significant advantage over competitors should Google decide to include these videos in search results in the future.
