Icon - Google+In the latest update to their dashboard, Google has implemented business categories to be included on Google+ Local pages. Previously, these categories were only able to be managed through Google Places (which is being phased out), but this functionality is now all in one central location.

These categories are part of the algorithm that determines which listings are displayed within Google search results, so it is vitally important that business owners take the opportunity to differentiate themselves over competitors.

How to Add Categories in Google+ Local

Google+ Local CategoriesAdding categories to Google+ Local listings is a straightforward process described in the steps below. However, your user account must first be verified to manage your business’s listing. If you have not already done so, we highly recommend reading our tutorial on that process called Verifying Your Google+ Local Page. When that is completed, just follow the steps below.

  1. Log into your Google+ account.
  2. On the left hand side of the screen, click the ‘Pages’ tab. (You may have to hover over ‘More.’)
  3. Click the ‘Switch to this page’ button that corresponds to your business’s Google+ page.
  4. Directly under your Cover Photo, click the ‘Edit business information’ button, then scroll down and click on the ‘Category’ section to edit it.
  5. Then, simply enter the categories that best describe your business. (Note: Categories must be picked from Google’s pre-determined list, so just start typing and select the closest available category.)

That’s it, your categories are selected and your Google+ Local listing will now be more likely to appear for more relevant searches. The system isn’t perfect (and these categories aren’t as versatile as the completely customizable ones available in previous versions), but there will definitely be more changes in the future as more and more feedback from business owners is received.
